Honoring Mike Cherry
It is with a heavy heart that we share with you about the passing of our beloved junior high Bible teacher, Mike Cherry. Mike went to be with his Savior on April 23, 2025 after battling brain cancer. We are heartbroken over the loss of Mike. This is extremely difficult news for our community. The loss of Mike is a loss of a friend, colleague, teacher, mentor, husband, father, and brother in Christ.

Mike’s love for the Lord was beyond evident in the way he lived his life, cared for others, and taught his classes. He used his life to bring glory to God and longed for everyone he knew to experience the powerful, redeeming love that only comes through Christ. While we grieve deeply, we celebrate the gift of the gospel and that Mike is cancer-free in Heaven because of his relationship with Jesus. There is hope in Jesus Christ, and we cling to that truth as a community.

His commitment to the teaching of the Bible, sense of humor, faithful service, joy, and compassion for others will be deeply missed. He served 20 years at WCGS and invested in countless students, families, and colleagues. Mike’s life verse has always been Ephesians 2:10, which states, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Mike’s wife, Karen, and children (Emma, Megan, and Eli) will continue to be in our prayers as they grieve this loss. Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” The family has shown the love of Christ in powerful ways throughout this journey.
