WCGS Chess Team State Tournament Results

The WCGS Chess team participated in the State Tournament this weekend, the pinnacle of the chess season for K-8 students in Ilinois. This year, there were 739 players participating – the highest number in a decade. The competition was stiff as there were many good players there.

WCGS had 19 players participating. They played great games and fought for every point. First grader, Josiah Bovey, won 2nd place for rating 300-499 in Lower Primary (grades K-1), winning four of seven games. Second grader, Colin Wicks, was the overall champion for Upper Primary (grades 2-3), with a perfect score. Colin won all seven of his games and was the uncontested champion of that section which consisted of 205 players! It is very difficult to leave with a trophy at any level at the state tournament.

Our 2nd-3rd grade team managed to tie for 10th place, missing out on a trophy due to tiebreakers.

The Chess Team is led by school parent, Rose Grandy, who works diligently to ensure that the team has the best coaches and resources to prepare them for competition. The team is thankful for Rose and coaches; Nathan, Mac, and Eddie, who lead and spent their weekend coaching and reviewing games to help the WCGS team learn and improve.

The WCGS Chess Team worked hard and competed with great sportsmanship. Congratulations to everyone! We are proud of the entire team.

The WCGS Chess Team is open to all interested players in grades K-8. No prior knowledge of chess is required but students new to chess should sign up for the “introduction to chess” class. The Chess Team meets from September through March and participates in a number of local tournaments.
