Parents Gather for Back to School Night

The night kicked-off with an all-parent meeting in the gym where Roger Burgess, Steve Clum, and Marc Painter addressed their appreciation of parents and the amazing support they give the school through service and prayer. The Lord has brought wonderful families to WCGS and not a day goes by where WCGS is not grateful for each of them. Their children are loved and cared for here.

Head of School, Steve Clum specifically talked about our school verse for the 2017-2018 school year – 1 Samuel 12:24. “Be sure to fear the Lord and serve Him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things He has done for you.” Referring to the second part of that verse, he asked parents to share what great things God has already done for them. Children, teachers, and salvation were among those mentioned. He asked parents to take it a step further though and talk to their kids about how God is working in their lives every day this school year, writing them down in a journal, and going back in May to reflect on the good things He has done.

Following Mr. Clum, Principal Marc Painter shared how the Administration wants the students to be able to understand the content they are taught, then apply it to their lives outside of the classroom, and lastly, engage in intellectual conversations with people about the concepts they learned. He pointed out that this also applies to their spiritual formation as well- understanding the Biblical content, and more importantly, applying it while engaging those around them to show the light of Jesus.

There is a battle that we are now facing. “We cannot passively hope that our children will eventually be able to grasp why God is not only possible, but necessary,” said Mr. Painter. “We need to be training our children early to know why God.” He continued saying that if we wait for questions to arise instead of having these discussions intentionally with our children, then other voices will lead the way that are not feeding them the truth. He noted that as a school, we intentionally have conversations with our students about the source of truth, and challenged the parents to initiate these discussions and make the invisible God a visible reality to their kids.

Parents were then dismissed to meet with the teachers and hear about the education their child is going to be getting at WCGS this year. There was a special surprise in our elementary classes where students in 1st grade made replicas of themselves on paper to try and fool their parents into thinking they were in class! We pray that Back to School Night was a blessing to each of you and thank you for your support of Wheaton Christian Grammar School.
