Freedom is Not Free: Veterans’ Day 2017

This special assembly featured our Concert Band and Orchestra playing The Star-Spangled Banner and Freedom Finale, as well as reflections from an 8th grade student on why we celebrate Veterans’ Day.

Mr. Clum commented on the experiences he and Mr. Painter had earlier that week in Washington D.C. when they visited Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. While there they witnessed 2 military burials and saw an engraved monument with the quote “Freedom is not Free” engraved on it. “In other words, there is a cost,” said Mr. Clum. “The gravestones you see represent thousands of men and women who have sacrificed their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today.”

Over 30 veterans attended the event and were introduced by student family members to the WCGS community. Throughout the school, there are over 70 veterans who are family members of students who were recognized in a slideshow during the beginning of the assembly. Watch it here:

Our speaker for the event was Major Greg Blaum, U.S. Air Force, Air National Guard, Cyber Protection Team Lead, 272d Cyber Operations Squadron, and school dad. Major Blaum discussed the history of the Air Force and its mission: To fly, fight, and win…in air, space, and cyberspace. There have been many technological advances that have impacted the Air Force which has led him to his current position where he protects and defends cyberspace threats for our country. With over 3 million threats each day, that military branch serves our country in many more ways than solely flying planes. Major Blaum is proud to serve our country and told our community that as Christians God calls us to serve, but it is not only in the army. “How and when you are called is between you and God,” said Major Blaum. “When that call of service comes from God, will you be ready? Be a hero. Answer the call.”

Thank you to all who have and are currently serving our country to give us the freedoms we have today. God bless America.
