Curriculum

Curriculum Selection

The selection and implementation of curriculum at Wheaton Christian Grammar School is an in-depth and important process. Two questions guide the selection of curriculum programs: Does the curriculum support our philosophy of education? Does the curriculum enhance the academic strengths of our programs and foster the academic nature of our students and teachers? When these two questions are answered positively, the implementation of curriculum resources begins and is ongoing. This process involves the partnership of administration, faculty, parents, students, and outside resources. A variety of Christian and non-Christian publishers provide curriculum resources in use at WCGS. Current publishers include: Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI); Christian Schools International (CSI); Modern Curriculum Press; Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley; Open Court Publishing; Hartcourt, Houghton, Mifflin, Holt, Rinehart, & Winston; Silver Burdett Ginn; SRA; Macmillan McGraw Hill; Glencoe; and Zaner-Bloser.

Content Area Philosophy

ART

Since we are created in God's image we have the ability to produce beauty and the capacity to appreciate beauty. Man's creativity is a reflection of God as the original Creator. "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him" (Genesis 1:27). The visual arts program provides experiences in the fundamentals of art. As we learn to see and study the beauty of God's creation, we also learn to glorify the Creator in a new way.

BIBLE

We hold the Bible to be the inerrant Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit and given to man as God's revelation of Himself to us. This book provides the starting point and the context for all our learning of truth. "All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Our goal is to help our students develop a respect for and submission to the Word of God. As we teach the Bible, we pray that each student will understand God more clearly, respond personally to the message of salvation, and grow in faith and obedience to Him. We want our students to become life-long students of the Word of God.

The teaching of God's Word is integrated consistently into all areas of study. A Christian education helps students think as Christ would. Students are trained to filter out information that contradicts Scripture and retain those principles of virtue that produce a wholesome thought pattern. In doing so, students develop morally and spiritually in the image of Christ.

COMPUTER SKILLS

The ability to understand and utilize technology in this age of information is essential to the success of the students at WCGS. We consider technology as another "tool" that God has allowed man to discover, to communicate with, to learn from, and to utilize in the processing of information. We develop computer literacy skills while supporting the course content of each grade level through the integration of technology into curriculum. This approach for implementation recognizes different modalities of learning and encourages students to be active participants in the learning process. The effective use of technology in the classroom can reap rewards, but it requires a substantial commitment to learn how to use it and use it effectively in a way that is God honoring (Philippians 4:8).

FOREIGN LANGUAGE

As our students learn to communicate in foreign languages, we seek to foster an appreciation of other cultures, sensitivity to cultural differences, and a lifelong desire to participate in multilingual and multicultural communities. We pray that the study of world languages will prepare our students to work effectively and humbly with people from other cultures. As Christians, we are His witnesses at home and abroad. "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8).

LANGUAGE ARTS

God has blessed us with the ability to communicate with Him and each other. Learning to communciate well requires the development and practice of strong literacy skills. At Wheaton Christian Grammar School we believe that the study of phonics, grammar, writing, literature, and oral expression will equip our students to communicate clearly and orderly, with confidence and boldness (2 Timothy 2:15). We believe God wants us to understand how to live in the world and relate to others without being "of the world" (Matthew 5:15-16, John 15:19). Our students live in a world of shifting values that demands our attention towards a meaningful, relevant, and strong Christian context and content for communication. Our hope is in Christ and we want to communicate this to others. It is our desire that our students learn to read, reason, speak, listen, and communicate well so they can live out their commitment to Christ, showing others what Christ values and what is of eternal value in a changing world (Romans 12:2).
LIBRARY SERVICES

The purpose of the library is to support the school's overall mission and to serve as a gateway of information for students and faculty. The library serves the school community by working collaboratively with classroom teachers, complementing co-curricular instruction, and promoting information literacy. The library services provide instruction in emerging life-long reading skills, facilitates the appropriate use of library facilities, and educates in acquiring, organizing, and maintaining information. As students develop literacy skills and acquire new information through library services, we pray that they also recognize that ultimately "in [Christ] are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3).

MATHEMATICS

Mathematics is taught with the understanding that our God created order, precision, and consistency. Through the study of mathematical truths, students gain a greater appreciation of the works of God in His creation. From basic math facts to complex algebraic equations, we want students to see that nothing happens by chance but by an exactness that only God could plan and execute. "When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him?" (Psalm 8:3-4).

MUSIC

Music is one of God's gifts to man. We believe music afford us a glimpse of God's charactver, of heaven, and the entire universe (Zephaniah 3:17, Revelation 14:2-3, Job 38:4-7). We can use the gift of music to praise and worship our Creator, for He established principles for sound and music which span all generatins and cultures (Psalm 92:103). We can learn and understand these principles to communicate to others and God for He designed our hearts, minds, and souls to respond to music (1 Samuel 16:23). Music can also be used to express our thankfulness for God's faithfulness to God through historical events, occasions, and victories. It is the goal of our instrumental and vocal music programs to expose students to the purposes and functions of music, to utilize their musical potential, and to honor God for this wonderful gift.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION & HEALTH

We acknowledge our bodies to be created and given to us by God. As Christians, our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit. We teach our students to care for and train their bodies as valuable gifts from God to be used by Him. Our students experience a wide variety of physical skills and activities. We regard these experiences on the playing field and in competition to produce lifelong character traits in our children. It is our desire that all their performances and training be for the glory of God. "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). We teach our students to lead healthy, disciplined, and pure lives before God, so they will be strong, alert, and ready for the work He has for them. "You were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body" (I Corinthians 6:20).

SCIENCE

Science is the study of God's created world, which includes God's natural revelation of Himself. To learn about how the universe is made, from the planetary systems, to the ecosystems, to the systems within the human body, is to learn more about the wonder of our Creator God. Wheaton Christian Grammar School is committed to the creationist view of the origin of the universe. "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1).

Our students are taught to evaluate scientific theory through the grid of Scripture. Children will learn not only practical knowledge about the world but also that God made everything for a purpose. "For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him" (Colossians 1:16). We desire that our students acquire a useful, working scientific knowledge of the world around them.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Social studies gives our students an appreciation for the people, places, and times used by God to accomplish His plan for our world. Students learn lessons from the past to see how God's sovereignty has molded and shaped countries and individuals. "These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us." (1 Corinthians 10:11). Our curriculum encourages students to develop a global knowledge and perspective of the world and to appreciate their own Christian heritage and culture. We encourage our students to exercise good stewardship over what God has given them and to make a commitment to be involved in His world and its people.

SPECIAL ACADEMICS

The Kaleidoscope Program, Reading Resource and Tutorial Service were established to help children who are experiencing some frustrations and/or difficulty in the regular classroom successfully utilize the skills God has given them. We believe all students should be viewed first as a part of God's creation. "Is he not your Father, your Creator who made you and formed you?" (Deuteronomy 32:6). We also believe, God has a plan for each believer to fulfill his role within the body of Christ. "But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be" (I Corinthians 12:18). Exceptional students are a part of God's eternal purpose, and how they face their difficulties with God's help, will be a testimony to His grace and overcoming power and ultimately, His glory. "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9).
